Mission: Interlude 4
Location: Captain's Ready Room - USS Belmont
Timeline: 11 NOV 2392

Lieutenant Commander Hansel Friedrich waited in front of the Captain's Ready room after pressing the chime. As the Chief Security Officer it wasn't rare for him to be called to meet with the Captain in private, but as the doors opened Hans knew something was different. The entire command staff of the USS Belmont was in the Captain's Office. If there was a meeting of the department heads that he wasn't told about it was normally held in the conference room in the adjoining room. He surveyed the room and the faces of his colleagues were serious like a slate of granite. The executive officer, Commander David Castle moved to stand as the Captain of the ship rose from his seat.

Captain Arturo De La Cruz was a good man, with high expectations of those who served under him. As he stood he looked up at Hans with a smile. "Welcome commander, I know you must be wondering why we've gathered here, and I'll get to that in a second. Can you tell me Hans, How long have you been on the Belmont?"

Hans sighed as he thought to himself, being put on the spot in front of the other department heads, he began to count on his fingers still standing at the position of attention. "16 years Sir." Hans remained standing there straight as a board waiting to find out what this was about. Have I done something wrong? Has the security of the ship been compromised? Hans thought to himself.

"At ease, Friedrich. This isn't an inquiry. Just the captain asking you a few question," Castle chimed in.

Hans relaxed his stance, his hands instinctively moved to the small of his back.

"The reason I've called you here Hans is you've been with us quiet a while," the Captain said. "I know we've talked a few times about reassignment... well I've talked but you know what I mean. Well the reason I've called you here today is because everyone here... I mean the staff and I and especially the XO has decided that we need a change in security."

Hans leg immediately locked up, an old injury would always act up when Hans was under unexpected stress. Normally in a tough situation adrenaline would kick in and counter the pain and stiffness, but here amongst his peers the thought of leaving his home. "I don't understand, Sir." Hans rubbed his leg.

"I've just told you the command staff of the USS Belmont has come together and decided that there needs to be a change in the head of security aboard this ship." The Captain reached into his desk. "It appears they all believe that the man in the position deserves more. Over the years you've been a constant on this ship. Hell, some even consider you a lucky charm. It's time to acknowledge all that work."

A promotion, thought Hans. But, if I'm promoted they'll make me leave the ship. Most ships aren't walking around with two Commanders. Perhaps it's back to Earth for me or some Federation Space Station as head of security for some Admiral. "Sir, I appreciate the sentiment, but the Belmont is my home."

The XO smiled grabbing a small box from the Captain, "You aren't going anywhere, Hans," He stepped forward and began removing the black pip from Hans' uniform, "and you aren't kicking me off the ship, but you are being promoted Commander Friedrich." Castle finished replacing the black pip with a gold one.

"That's correct Hans," the Captain confirmed. "Now along with the promotion I'm going to ask you to be my second officer. I figured asking you in front of the rest of the staff you might not turn me down. I know you keep to yourself and I know you can be quiet, but I'll be damned if I don't turn you into a fine command officer, and the officers in this room respect and trust you."

Hans didn't know what to say, he looked around the room then back to the Captain and XO.

"Come on Hans, to be honest, I could use the help. At the very least to carry the workload on the paperwork and heaven knows you do that better than any other officer on this ship," Castle joked.

"Of course, Sir," Hans said rubbing his leg.

"Speech, Speech, Speech," taunted the rest of the command staff.

Hans stood there frozen.

"Speech, Speech, Speech," continued the rest of the staff with the Captain and the XO joining in as they passed around glasses of champagne.

Hans thought for a second and held up his glass. "The Belmont is my home, but it's more than the bridge, or the engine room. It's more than the corridors or the shuttle bay. It is the crew of this ship, and while I know I keep to myself most of the time. This is the only family I know, Sir," Hans looked over at the Captain. "It would be my honor to serve as your second officer."
